Short Narrative on Organization: The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America (UAW) is one of the largest and most diverse unions in North America, with members in virtually every sector of the economy. UAW-represented workplaces range from multinational corporations, small manufacturers and state and local governments to colleges and universities, hospitals and private non-profit organizations. The UAW has more than 400,000 active members and more than 580,000 retired members in the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The UAW maintains an in-house legal staff of 10 attorneys. The Legal Department’s offices are located in UAW International Headquarters in Detroit, Michigan.
Law Clerk Job Description: Aside from traditional research and writing assignments, law clerks in the Department are often asked to draft briefs and accompany staff lawyers to hearings and oral arguments. Law clerks also have the opportunity to participate in union-sponsored events such as rallies and marches.
Requirements for the Position: The Legal Department generally hires second-year law students with some coursework in or exposure to labor law, although first-year students are also considered.
