The Amalgamated Transit Union is the largest labor union representing transit workers in North America, with over 200,00 members in the United States and Canada. ATU Division 757 was first established in 1917, and is based in Portland, Oregon. ATU Division 757 represents 22 different transit properties, with a total of over 5,000 members. ATU represents employees working as operators, mechanics, and in other positions at transit agencies throughout the State of Oregon and in Southwest Washington.
ATU seeks a General Counsel to work full time in its Portland office. The General Counsel is integral to advancing ATU Division 757’s mission and is responsible for serving as the principal legal advisor to the Local. We are looking for an exceptional attorney to join us in our fight to improve and expand worker’s rights. The General Counsel will provide legal representation to the Local, and advice to officers and staff of the Union.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and counsel regarding union organizing, campaigns, negotiations, grievances, and contract enforcement.
- Represent ATU Division 757 in contract negotiations and assist in the development of and implementation of bargaining strategy.
- Represent ATU Division 757 in labor management meetings.
- Provide counsel on legal matters, as directed, to the ATU Division 757 Executive Board
- Independently manage and oversee arbitrations and litigation, ULPs, and DFRs.
- Work closely with outside counsel on litigation matters.
- Assist with and provide advice and counsel to union leadership on internal Union governance and employment matters.
- Train staff, shop stewards, and members on legal issues.
- Perform legal research, craft legal analysis, and prepare legal briefs and memorandum as directed, or in support of caseload of arbitration and litigation
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
- Graduation from an accredited law school;
- At least one year of relevant legal experience; admission (or pending admission) to Oregon bar;
- Demonstrated knowledge of labor and employment law;
- Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities, and demonstrates a strong commitment to progressive causes.
- Proficiency in working with Westlaw or Lexis/legal research, Excel and applicable Microsoft Office applications.
