Based in Washington, DC, James & Hoffman represents labor unions and employees. In the past six months, the firm has grown its longstanding federal employment practice to meet the need created by the Trump administration’s unprecedented attack on the federal workforce. For instance, the firm has developed class actions on behalf of probationary employees at the Merit Systems Protection Board, and is working closely with other firms, labor unions, and nonprofits on these cases. Aside from its federal employee work, the firm’s other practice areas include representing unions and private sector employees at arbitration, administrative agencies, and in court.

The firm is currently accepting applications from second-year law students for a summer associate position in summer 2026. Please submit any application by September 19, 2025.

Summer Associates can expect to take on a variety of responsibilities related to our firm’s labor and employment practice. This may include research and writing for various phases of trial and appellate litigation, as well as administrative actions and arbitration. When possible, summer associates are given opportunities to attend client intake sessions, depositions, arbitrations, and court appearances, as well as meetings and events in the Washington, D.C. area labor community. Applicants should have superior academic records; excellent writing, research and oral communication skills; strong work references; and a demonstrated interest in labor and employment law. The weekly summer associate salary is $1,634.62. To apply, please send a cover letter, resume, law school transcript, and up to two writing samples to Michael Ellement.
