The legal department of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union (UFCW) is seeking a new lawyer to work as a law fellow in its Washington, DC headquarters office.  The fellowship is for one year, with possible renewal for a second year upon mutual agreement of the fellow and the UFCW.  The salary range is $92,537-$100,165, depending on number of years since graduating law school. Recent law graduates and judicial clerks are invited to apply.

Law fellows work with experienced attorneys on a variety of issues, including organizing campaigns (both traditional and nontraditional), collective bargaining, strikes, litigation and other UFCW initiatives. In addition to labor and employment law, law fellows are exposed to First Amendment, defamation and immigration law.

Applicants should have demonstrated a commitment to workers’ rights and to the labor movement. Applicants should also possess strong analytical ability, and effective oral and written communication skills.

The successful applicant must be or become a member of the District of Columbia bar.

As the largest private sector labor union in North America, the United Food and Commercial Workers represents more than 1.2 million workers in the United States and Canada. Its members are employed principally in grocery stores, food processing and packing plants, retail and department stores.

The UFCW’s Legal Department represents the International Union and local unions on legal issues arising from organizing campaigns, collective bargaining, union administration, personnel and other matters.
