Labor and Employment Law Attorney Wanted

Hayes, Ortega & Sánchez is a union-side labor law firm with offices in Los Angeles County and San Diego County. We represent labor unions and their members in both the public and private sectors. We seek an associate attorney with 3+ years of experience for our satellite office in Monrovia, California. Our practice includes labor arbitrations, labor contract negotiations, litigation, proceedings before the National Labor Relations Board, research, and writing opinions for clients on labor law issues.

Qualifications:

  • A Juris Doctor degree and membership in good standing with the California Bar.
  • An excellent command of the English language, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and persuasively in briefs and oral argument.
  • Ability to perform legal research.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally.

Other factors:

  • Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus but is not required.
  • Experience working for a labor law firm or as a union representative is a plus but not required.
  • Admission to the Nevada Bar is a plus but not required.
  • A commitment to the American labor movement and a desire to help others is a plus.

The successful candidate will primarily represent the firm’s clients in administrative hearings that require the making of opening statements, taking direct testimony, cross-examining adverse witnesses, making objections, and drafting closing briefs using the transcript of the proceedings. The cases primarily involve discipline or contract interpretation. In a discipline case, the issue is generally whether an employee’s discipline or discharge was with just cause. In a contract interpretation case, the issue is generally whether the employer violated a collective bargaining agreement when it took a certain action. New associates receive necessary training, which includes attending lectures and hearings to observe the proceedings.

Compensation is competitive and the firm offers an excellent benefits package that includes fully paid healthcare premiums, life insurance, long-term disability, sick leave, vacation, and automatic contributions of 3% to an ABA 401k plan after one year.

To be considered, you must send a cover letter, resume, writing sample, and salary requirements to Dennis J. Hayes by email at djh@sdlaborlaw.com and rqs@sdlaborlaw.com. No telephone calls please.
