Position Overview

SEIU Local 32BJ is seeking a Project Director to lead a joint initiative with SEIU Local 1199. Reporting to the SEIU Local 32BJ Research & Policy Director, this role will convene and coordinate an Advisory Committee representing both unions and drive a unified project strategy.

The 2-Union Immigration Project aims to bring workers together across race through a member power building program. During the 2-year project, the Director will develop union members/leaders to analyze & organize around how worker power is diminished when immigration status and race are used to divide working people. 

Duties, Tasks, and Responsibilities

  • Convene and coordinate the Advisory Committee by establishing a regular meeting schedule and communication system to develop and execute a joint campaign plan.
  • Compile, develop, and implement resources for member education and protection clinics.
  • Collaborate with Advisory Committee to identify New York City area local union member leaders, and support their recruitment into leadership development trainings.
  • Identify and train new member leaders to participate in get out the vote (GOTV) activities relating to midterm elections, with a focus on Long Island.
  • Build communication channels with key allies and partners, and coordinate member leader participation in rallies, press conferences, and public actions demonstrating our unions’ leadership and commitment to protecting immigrant workers.
  • This is a 2 year position.

Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience working on issues relating to: worker’s rights, immigrant rights, or policies impacting low-income communities.
  • Prior experience working with unions and union members.
  • Prior experience developing educational resources for workers and community members.
  • Ability to communicate in written and spoken Spanish or Haitian Creole, in addition to English.
  • Ability to develop and work with high functioning teams.
  • Able to drive program and move work involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, adapt to shifting priorities, and respond effectively in fast-paced or crisis situations.
  • High proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Knowledge of labor unions, legislative and policy processes, and the current political landscape.
  • Commitment to social justice and advancing the Union’s mission.
  • Willingness to travel to union offices, worksites, and work extended and non-standard hours, as needed.

Compensation & Benefits

The salary range for this role is $100K to $113K, based on experience. 32BJ offers a generous benefits package that includes full employer-paid medical, dental and vision plan (for full-time employees and their qualified dependents), retirement benefits, and a 401K. 32BJ offers paid time off including three weeks’ vacation, eleven holidays, twelve sick days and four personal days. The union currently offers a remote work policy of one remote day per week at the discretion of the manager.
