UPTE seeks an attorney with at least 3 years of experience to assist our General Counsel (and other staff and member leaders) in securing a new contract with the University of California (UC)  and organizing thousands of non-union UC employees. Our members are health care professionals, technical professionals (such as IT workers) and staff researchers. Our Legal Department's primary workload is with the California Public Employment Relations Board, but we're also handling several lawsuits on diverse issues including our state's Public Records Act and wage-hour laws. Our members rarely end up in disciplinary arbitrations or file DFR charges. While the position is posted as Senior Staff (managerial/supervisory), the union staff and leadership generally get along very well, so any HR legal work is rare. We work with great outside counsel and maintain work-life balance. While applicants who are California residents are preferred (because in-person appearances are occasionally needed), we're open to applicants residing elsewhere willing to travel to California at least once per month (on average) and willing to strongly consider relocating to California. Salary range $140-170K DOE.
